The management of Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago Iwoye, has announced that it lost valuable items, including all students’ academic and graduation gowns worth millions of naira, in a fire that broke out in a section of the Directorate of Students’ Affairs building.
The fire incident reportedly took place in the early hours of Tuesday last week.
In a statement issued by the university’s Deputy Registrar, Corporate Affairs Division, and signed by Dr. Wale Balogun, the institution confirmed that no injuries or casualties resulted from the event.
The statement reads in part: “A devastating fire occurred at the Directorate of Students Affairs building on Tuesday, September 2nd, 2025, causing extensive damage to valuables worth millions of naira.
“The fire, which happened in the early hours of that day, gutted a section of the Students’ Affairs building at the university’s Main Campus, where items such as students’ academic and graduation gowns were stored.
“Regrettably, all the graduation gowns were completely destroyed by the fire. However, there were no injuries or casualties reported.”
The university also stated that an investigative panel, led by a distinguished professor, has been established to determine the cause of the fire and to review campus safety measures.
