The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Oyo State Sector Command, has celebrated Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary with a youth-focused initiative aimed at promoting safety consciousness, civic responsibility, and national awareness among young people.
As part of the activities marking the occasion, the Command, in partnership with the Hallelujah Divine Height Organisation, organised an inter-school quiz competition in Ibadan on October 1, 2025.In a statement issued by the FRSC, the quiz was described as a platform for secondary school students to broaden their knowledge beyond academics, while developing values such as teamwork, discipline, and leadership. Participants competed on questions relating to road safety rules, civic duties, history, and national development.
The Oyo State Sector Commander, Corps Commander RUK Alo, who addressed the gathering, emphasised the Corps’ dedication to raising a new generation of safety-conscious Nigerians. He noted that early engagement with schools remains one of the most effective ways of reducing accidents and instilling a culture of responsibility in society.Also present at the event were representatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and the Rescuer Organisation.
These stakeholders enlightened the students on broader issues of drug abuse prevention, safety, and social responsibility, reinforcing the need for collective action in shaping young people’s values.At the conclusion of the competition, outstanding students and schools were recognised with certificates, plaques, and prizes, while all participants were encouraged to act as safety ambassadors in their schools, homes, and communities.
The initiative falls under the FRSC’s “Catch Them Young” programme, which focuses on secondary school students nationwide.
The Corps explained that the project is particularly important given data from the National Bureau of Statistics, which shows that over 40 per cent of road accident victims recorded between 2020 and 2024 were youths aged 10 to 29 years.The Oyo quiz competition not only celebrated the nation’s independence but also reaffirmed the FRSC’s mission of building a safer, more responsible future generation.
