Nsikak-Abasi Ebong, the best graduating student of Babcock University’s School of Computing, shares with TEMITOPE ADETUNJI how curiosity and relentless pursuit of excellence drove him to excel academically.
What was your early life and childhood like before university?
He grew up in Akwa Ibom State in a home that encouraged curiosity and exploration. From a young age, he was fascinated by how things worked—gadgets, simple machines, and everyday processes. He spent hours dismantling toys and trying to understand electronics, laying a foundation for his love of learning and problem-solving. Outside academics, he enjoyed playing video games, socializing, and harmless mischief. His parents balanced discipline with love; his father emphasized resilience and perseverance, while his mother encouraged resilience after failures. This supportive environment helped him face challenges later in life.
What position do you occupy in your family, and how has that shaped you?
He is the second of four children, which taught him empathy, responsibility, and mediation. Being in the middle position helped him understand different perspectives and take accountability, qualities that benefitted his teamwork and leadership skills during his studies.
When did you gain admission into Babcock University, and what influenced your choice of course?
He was admitted in 2021 to study Computer Science. Initially, he aimed for medicine at the University of Ibadan but was encouraged to pursue computing after a corps member recognized his aptitude. His elder brother, also a Computer Science graduate, influenced his decision. Although the switch was unexpected, he embraced it and graduated on July 27, 2025.
How old were you when you gained admission?
He was 16; now he is 20.
What was your first-year experience like?
He describes it as a mix of excitement and adjustment. Meeting new people and exploring campus life was thrilling, but independence posed challenges like managing time and workload. He developed routines, learned to prioritize, and gradually adapted, reducing stress.
What challenges did you face during your academic journey?
He faced tight deadlines, heavy workloads, and moments of self-doubt, especially when projects failed. He overcame these by breaking tasks into manageable goals, focusing on progress, and relying on his faith for motivation and perspective.
Were there times you felt like giving up?
Yes, during intense periods with multiple deadlines, but he knew giving up was not an option. The thought of his family’s sacrifices and future opportunities motivated him to persevere.
How did your parents and siblings react when you graduated top of your class?
Their reaction was overwhelming joy. His parents’ sacrifices and prayers were validated, and his siblings felt inspired. Their happiness made his achievement even more meaningful.
In what ways did your family support you?
They supported him financially, emotionally, and morally through encouragement, advice, and prayers. Their consistent support gave him stability and confidence.
Did you have mentors or friends who shaped your journey?
Yes. His Head of Department, Dr. Seun Ebiesuwa, emphasized real-world preparation. Lecturers like Dr. Ernest, Dr. Izang, Prof. Kuyoro, and Mr. Udosen provided mentorship beyond academics. Friends like Ezekiel, Wisdom, and Anjola supported him during long nights and group projects, contributing significantly to his success.
What specific study habits worked for you?
Consistency in reviewing notes, breaking tasks into smaller parts, and understanding concepts deeply rather than rote memorization. Surrounding himself with motivated peers also helped maintain diligence and curiosity.
How did you balance academics with side projects and social life?
Discipline was key. He maintained a structured routine that allocated time for studies, leadership roles, freelancing, personal projects, and relaxation. He integrated activities like church leadership, freelancing, and building Acad AI with his studies, seeing them as complementary.
Tell us about Acad AI. What is your vision for it?
Acad AI is an AI-powered platform that streamlines assessment grading, making it faster, fairer, and more transparent. It can generate questions, detect malpractice, and provide quick feedback. Originating as a research project, its vision is to revolutionize education assessment across Africa.
What challenges did you face building Acad AI?
Major challenges included training unbiased AI for theory grading and ensuring security against malpractice. Managing the startup, gathering feedback, and iterating the product also demanded patience and persistence.
Do you think students should start building startups while in school?
Yes, but with careful management. Universities offer a safe environment to experiment and learn from mistakes. Discipline, prioritization, and understanding limits are crucial.
Were there sacrifices you had to make?
Absolutely. He sacrificed sleep, leisure, and social events, often spending nights debugging code or studying. These sacrifices felt like investments toward his future, reinforcing his dedication.
How did it feel being named Best Graduating Student of the School of Computing?
It was surreal. Holding a 4.92 CGPA symbolized perseverance and sacrifices. The recognition, beyond grades, validated his resilience and dedication, motivating him for future challenges like Acad AI.
Have you received any awards or recognitions?
Yes. Apart from being the best student, he received plaques, certificates, and a tablet in recognition of his efforts.
What do you think made the difference for you compared to your peers?
His approach to learning—deep understanding, practical application, and connecting theory with real-world projects—set him apart. This balance kept him motivated and meaningful in his studies.
What advice would you give to students struggling with academics?
Don’t give up. Avoid constant comparison; find methods that work for you. Break tasks into manageable parts, stay consistent, and seek help. Building a supportive circle is also vital.
What would you say to those who believe academics and entrepreneurship can’t go together?
It’s possible with proper prioritization and discipline. Entrepreneurship can sharpen academic focus if managed well. Balance is key.
What are your immediate and long-term plans?
Currently, he is leading development at Acad AI, aiming to expand its reach. Long-term, he wants to innovate in education and healthcare, mentor young talents, and create impactful solutions for Africa’s progress.
In five to ten years, where do you see yourself?
He envisions developing accessible tech solutions, mentoring others, and contributing to Africa’s educational and technological advancement through impactful innovations.
