On Saturday, July 30, 2022, the National Youth Democratic Assembly (NYDA) held its first ever stakeholders meeting at the Icon Valley Hotel in Abuja. The event, which was graced by youths from all over the country, aimed to chart a course towards providing opportunities for youths in the next five years.
The NYDA is a non-partisan and non-profit civil society that aims to redefine the role and contribution of the Nigerian youths in governance and the development of Nigeria.
The founder and president of the NYDA, Henry Chinaemere Nwaiwu, in his address, bemoaned the ongoing strike action embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and its debilitating effects on educational standards in the country, urging the government to focus on bringing it to an end.
“Available records indicate that Nigerian universities rank low in the table of performance in both research and academic work,” Nwaiwu asserted, linking the depressing quality of education in Nigeria to recurrent face-offs between ASUU and the Federal Government of Nigeria.
Further, Nwaiwu besought ASUU to “shift ground in the condition they have given to the federal government.
“Our humble appeal is for them to resume classes while pressing more of their demand,” he explained, optimistic that a working agreement will go a long way in reducing the societal unrest exacerbated by the strike.
