The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), has arrived in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State, where he will cast his vote on Saturday, February 25, 2023, the Presidential Election day.
A statement signed on Thursday by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, revealed that the Leonardo AW139 helicopter conveying Buhari from the Katsina Airport touched down in Daura at 05:25pm, after which he was conveyed home by a retinue of DSS officials.
The statement was titled ‘President Buhari arrives Katsina for presidential elections.’
Buhari who has been on the ballot in five consecutive election cycles will, for the first time in two decades (2003- 2023), join the electorate to vote for another candidate asides from himself.
Shehu revealed that Buhari will cast his vote at a polling unit close to his country home in Daura, alongside his wife, Aisha Buhari and other family members.
Also voting in Daura will be members of his entourage, including security, protocol and other State House staff.
Upon arrival, the President was received by the Katsina State Governor, Aminu Masari and the Director General of the National Intelligence Agency, Ahmed Abubakar.
Before heading to Daura, Buhari had participated in 10 of the 37 Presidential campaign rallies of the All Progressives Congress in all states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.
He appeared in Katsina, Imo, Sokoto, Nasarawa, Adamawa, Bauchi, Yobe, Gombe, Plateau and Lagos States.
The campaign rallies which were concluded in Lagos on Tuesday has seen Buhari presenting the flagbearer, Bola Tinubu, as his preferred successor, and his running mate, Kashim Ibrahim.
Tinubu who served as Governor of Lagos from 1999 to 2007 emerged as the APC presidential candidate after scoring the highest number of votes among 23 asirants in the Party’s primary elections in June 2022.
In July that year, he handpicked a former Governor of Borno State, Northeast Nigeria, Kashim Shettima, as his running mate.
18 presidential candidates will appear on the ballot this Saturday.
However, the majority of Nigerians are familiar with four of those candidates.
They include the APC’s Bola Tinubu, the Peoples Democratic Party’s Atiku Abubakar, Labour Party’s Peter Obi and a former Governor of Kano State, Rabiu Kwankwaso, who is contesting on the New Nigeria Peoples Party ticket.
In the 97 days the campaigns lasted, all four candidates have expressed their belief to clinch the Presidency and lead Africa’s most populous state.
They have pitched to Nigerians their preferred strategies for reviving the dwindling economy, fighting rife insecurity and uprooting widespread corruption.
