The National Drug and Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) Ogun state Command has collaborated with the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) to curb the use of illicit drugs among students.
The State Commandant, Ln Jane Odili made this known while receiving the students’ body led by the NANS National Deputy Senate President, Comr. Elvis Segun Ekundina, PSM NIG. National President , Comr. Okereafor Bestman Opeyemi among others at the command’s headquarters’ quarter in Abeokuta the State capital.
The leadership of NANS had paid a courtesy visit, proposing an avenue where representatives from major parastatals including the health sector in the state will come together to enlighten the students on the harms in the use of illicit drugs.
In response, the NDLEA boss described drug abuse as a major problem affecting students/youths not only in the country but in diaspora hence the need to join hands.
She added that the abuse of drugs is a consequential problem that cannot be ignored as long as the society is increasing.
In her words “According to a recent survey, 14.3 million Nigerians between the ages of 15 and 64 are drug addicts, it is a consequential problem that cannot be ignored as long as the society keeps increasing”
“One out of four of every drug user is a woman and one out of five is injecting this drugs into themselves especially _Cannabis Sativa_ which is the most common.
“Adequate communication is needed and NANS is a critical stakeholder in the sensitization of the students/ youths” she stressed.
Furthermore, she stated that a one day workshop will be held to enlighten the students’ stakeholders so as to be a window in helping in sensitization of other students/youths.
Deputy Commander of Narcotics, Mr. Ekundayo Williams, thanked the students’ bodies for coming at the right time saying the command cannot do it alone and assured an adequate support in helping students/youths break free from the menace.
