Bishop Charles Ighele, the General Superintendent of the Holy Spirit Mission in Ikeja, Lagos State, has called for a ban on the celebration of Valentine’s Day in Nigeria.
He argues that the day has been misinterpreted to promote romantic relationships instead of its original purpose, which is to serve those in need through humanitarian efforts.
Ighele expressed concerns that the day encourages behaviors he describes as immoral, which he believes undermine the essence of true love as taught in the Bible. He asserts that the day is associated with a figure he refers to as “Cupid,” whom he characterizes as a negative influence promoting sexual desires and actions contrary to divine love.
He believes that authorities should prohibit the celebration of Valentine’s Day due to its adverse impact on young people.
According to him, it is essential for the government, as well as institutions like churches, schools, and families, to work together to foster a culture of redeeming values. He emphasized that banning the celebration could lead to a positive change in society.Valentine’s Day, celebrated annually on February 14, originated as a Christian feast day in honor of a martyr named Valentine, but has since transformed into a broader cultural celebration of romance and love.
