President Bola Tinubu arrived in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia on Thursday night to attend the 38th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of the African Union (AU) Heads of State and Government.He was greeted at the airport by Ethiopian Deputy Chief of Protocol, Eshetu Legesse, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, and the charge d’affaires of the Nigerian embassy in Ethiopia, Ambassador Nasir Aminu.

Ambassador Tuggar subsequently briefed President Tinubu about the summit and recent diplomatic successes for Nigeria, a session that concluded around 2 a.m. on Friday.Notable achievements included the re-election of Ambassador Bankole Adeoye as African Union Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security. Furthermore, Nigeria retained its seat on the African Union Peace and Security Council, which Ambassador Tuggar highlighted as a confirmation of “Nigeria’s leadership and commitment to peace and security on the continent.

The briefing was attended by the following ministers: Mr. Wale Edun (Finance), Abubakar Badaru (Defence), Jumoke Oduwole (Trade and Investment), Festus Keyamo (Aviation), Muhammed Idris (Information and National Orientation), Balarabe Abbas Lawal (Environment), and Doris Uzoka-Anite (State for Finance).

Also present were Ambassador Mohammed Mohammed, Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency, and Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla, Chief of Naval Staff.

The theme for this year’s AU summit is ‘Justice for Africans and People of African Descent Through Reparations,’ with a focus on reparatory justice and racial healing.President Tinubu is scheduled to give a speech at the Summit-level meeting of the African Union Peace and Security Council, where discussions will center on ongoing security concerns within Africa, including the escalating conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

He will also take part in meetings concerning health financing, the establishment of an Africa Credit Rating Agency, and climate change.According to a statement released on Friday by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, President Tinubu is expected to return to Abuja on Monday, February 17.
