Senate President Senator Godswill Akpabio on Friday dismissed allegations made by suspended Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, who claimed he enlisted former Governor Yahaya Bello to kill her, calling the accusation “false and malicious.
The clarification came in a statement released in Abuja by Akpabio’s media aide, Eseme Eyiboh.
Akpoti-Uduaghan made her allegations while speaking to supporters in Kogi on Wednesday, asserting that Akpabio sought Bello’s aid for an assassination plot against her in Kogi State, a claim that the state government has also refuted.
In response, Akpabio stated that there is no truth to Akpoti-Uduaghan’s assertions, which he labeled as a deliberate smear campaign aimed at tarnishing his reputation as a leader.
He remarked, “This outrageous accusation is not only false but a complete fabrication, representing a deeply irresponsible attempt to incite public unrest, draw media attention, and undermine the integrity of the Senate President’s office for ulterior motives.
He further noted that Akpoti-Uduaghan had previously leveled unsubstantiated accusations of sexual harassment against him, claims she has since abandoned.
He observed that having failed to gain traction with that narrative, she has now escalated her misinformation campaign.Akpabio emphasized, “It is a matter of public record that she has made similar assassination allegations against Yahaya Bello and others in the past, alongside multiple unfounded claims of sexual harassment against other dignitaries.
Her recurring persecution narrative should not be weaponized to damage the reputations of others.”Additionally, Akpabio addressed accusations from former Adamawa North Senator Elisha Abbo, who alleged that Akpabio was responsible for his removal from the National Assembly following a Court of Appeal ruling on October 16, 2023. Abbo made his claims during a live appearance on Arise Television.
Akpabio countered, asserting that Abbo’s removal resulted from a legitimate judicial decision, and expressed suspicion that these similar allegations could indicate a coordinated effort to discredit him.He called for apologies and retractions from both individuals to avoid pursuing legal action.
Nigerians will recall that Abbo publicly retracted a similar accusation in 2023, acknowledging it was based on false assumptions. His court-ordered removal was not politically motivated, but a rightful judicial determination,” he added.The statement concluded with the Senate President declaring his resolute stance against the attacks, indicating that formal demands for public retractions, apologies, and compensation for reputational harm will be sought from both Akpoti-Uduaghan and Abbo.
