The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has distanced itself from a wave of false and misleading messages aimed at candidates who registered for the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination. Dr. Fabian Benjamin, the spokesperson for JAMB, issued a statement on Wednesday in Abuja, revealing that these messages are being circulated by suspected fraudsters attempting to deceive unsuspecting individuals.

Benjamin explained that the scammers have taken advantage of the numerical code for the UTME, 8863, and blended it with JAMB’s shortcode, 55019, to create a counterfeit code that mimics the Board’s official messaging system.

Through this deceitful scheme, they are sending inappropriate messages to candidates, falsely claiming that they have detected irregularities in their JAMB details and urging them to contact certain individuals for assistance in “resolving” these non-existent issues.

He stressed that these messages do not originate from JAMB and confirmed that security agencies have been informed and are actively pursuing the fraudsters behind this scheme.“Candidates are strongly urged to disregard such messages.

This tactic is commonly used by fraudsters during examination periods to prey on and defraud naive candidates,” he cautioned.

He also encouraged the public to stay alert and critically evaluate any messages they receive, advising that any communication that does not come through JAMB’s official channels or contains suspicious language or requests should be treated as fraudulent.
