A cement-laden truck lost control and caused a tragic accident at the Badagry Roundabout in Lagos on Monday, resulting in the deaths of a traffic officer and two motorcyclists.
The incident occurred around 9:45 a.m., when the truck suddenly veered off course while approaching the busy junction, colliding with the victims. The casualties included a Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) official on duty and two commercial motorcyclists who were waiting for passengers.Eyewitnesses reported that the truck’s sudden loss of control led to the deadly crash, which sent shockwaves through the community.
An official of the Lagos State Neighbourhood Safety Corps stated, “The truck hit the LASTMA staff on official duty and two cyclists waiting to carry passengers.” He added that the truck driver attempted to maneuver to reduce the impact, potentially saving more lives and property.
The driver was quickly arrested and taken to the Badagry Police Station. Mr. Yusuf Sanni, Unit Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), confirmed the arrest and blamed the accident on the driver’s loss of control. He urged motorists to exercise caution and avoid the area.
The victims’ remains have been deposited at the hospital mortuary, and the truck has been impounded at the police station.CSP Folajimi Agosile, the Divisional Police Officer of Badagry Police Station, said the driver is currently in custody pending prosecution and will be arraigned at the Chief Magistrates’ Court after investigations are completed.
Rescue officials from FRSC, LASTMA, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, and the Nigeria Police Force were seen working to clear the expressway and restore order following the tragic incident.
