The Lagos State Government has announced the deployment of 1,710 fully functional public toilets across the state as part of its drive to improve sanitation and curb open defecation.
Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, made this known in a statement shared on X, explaining that the facilities have been strategically positioned to cater to both residents and visitors.
He emphasized that the government cannot tackle sanitation challenges alone, calling on private businesses such as restaurants, banks, and filling stations to support the initiative by making their restrooms accessible to the public where possible.
According to Wahab, the move is aimed at strengthening sanitation coverage through a collaborative effort between the government and private sector operators, ensuring more people have access to proper facilities.
He also noted that enforcement of environmental sanitation laws has been intensified, with authorities arresting and prosecuting individuals found engaging in open defecation.
Wahab stressed that these actions are crucial to safeguarding public health, preserving human dignity, and maintaining a cleaner environment across the state.
He further highlighted that sanitation remains a collective responsibility, urging residents and business owners to contribute their part while the government continues to expand infrastructure to keep Lagos clean, safe, and livable.
