The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has issued a directive mandating all police officers across the country to wear black bands throughout the seven-day mourning period for the late Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja.According to reports from Vanguard, the presidency confirmed on Wednesday that Lagbaja passed away at the age of 56 after a battle with an undisclosed illness.In response to his passing on Tuesday, the Federal Government ordered that the national flag be flown at half-mast in honor of the late Chief of Army Staff, who was appointed by President Bola Tinubu on June 19, 2023.In a statement released on Thursday, Force Public Relations Officer Olumuyiwa Adejobi announced the decision for all police personnel to don black bands as a mark of respect for Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, who demonstrated valor and commitment in the fight against insurgency.The statement read: “In light of the passing of the late Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM, has directed officers and men of the Nigeria Police Force to wear black bands throughout the seven-day mourning period.“This directive serves to pay tribute to the late General, who exhibited gallantry, dedication, and a deep passion for combating violent crimes and insurgency in Nigeria. He was an exemplary leader who deserves to be honored in every way possible.“May the soul of the late Chief of Army Staff rest in peace.”
