The Nigerian Senate suspended Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan for six months following allegations of sexual harassment against Senate President Godswill Obot Akpabio.

This decision came after a report from the Senate Committee on Ethics, led by Senator Imasuen Neda Bernards, which highlighted multiple violations of Senate rules during an investigation in which Akpoti-Uduaghan was allowed to present her side.

The committee’s findings indicated that she disrupted proceedings by refusing her assigned seat and engaging in a public altercation.Senators expressed differing views on the matter; while some emphasized the need to uphold the Senate’s rules and protect its integrity, others, like Minority Leader Abba Moro, advocated for a more lenient three-month suspension to allow for reflection. Despite personal ties to Akpoti-Uduaghan, Senate President Akpabio supported the suspension after a voice vote.
