On Friday, the national grid faced a significant disturbance, leaving several areas, particularly Lagos, in darkness.
This disruption occurred amidst the Federal Government’s celebration of what it termed a significant milestone in power generation, which had recently peaked at 6,000 MW. However, our correspondent reports that power generation plummeted to below 1,000 MW at 2 PM, a sharp decline from around 4,000 MW just hours earlier.
The highest power generation recorded on Friday was 5,284 MW at 5 AM. By 4 PM, generation had dwindled to just 803 MW, with many power plants still unable to resume supply to the national grid.
The Transmission Company of Nigeria has not yet responded to this incident, as their spokesperson, Ndidi Mbah, has been unreachable.Meanwhile, the Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company issued a statement informing customers of the outage: “Dear esteemed customer, we experienced a system outage today, March 7, 2025, at 14:00 hours, affecting supply within our network. Restoration efforts are ongoing in collaboration with our critical stakeholders. We appreciate your patience.”Similarly, the Eko Electricity Distribution Company reached out to its customers, stating: “Dear valued customer, a system disruption occurred on March 7, 2025, at 13:59 hours, resulting in a loss of power supply across our network.
We are actively working with our partners for a speedy restoration of the grid and will provide updates as soon as power supply is restored. Thank you for your understanding.”
