The High Court of the Federal Capital Territory in Abuja has allowed the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to permit two additional witnesses to testify virtually in the case against former Central Bank of Nigeria Governor, Mr. Godwin Emefiele. Justice Maryanne Anenih granted this request during a hearing, acknowledging that the witnesses are located in the United Kingdom.

EFCC’s lead counsel, Mr. Rotimi Oyedepo, presented the need for additional witnesses and submitted evidence to support the charges against Emefiele.

In response, Emefiele’s lead counsel, Mr. Olalekan Ojo, contested the informal nature of the EFCC’s request, arguing that a formal application should have been submitted. However, the court found that the names of the witnesses and reasons for virtual testimony were adequately included in the filed proofs. In court, an EFCC witness, Mr. Chinedu Eneanya, discussed the investigation related to the allegations against Emefiele regarding the redesign of the Naira.

He detailed how his team involved several former CBN Deputy Governors and obtained statements related to the case. Eneanya revealed that Emefiele had requested approval from former President Muhammadu Buhari to redesign currency notes and that the production faced challenges, leading to changes in the color scheme and the involvement of a UK-based company, De La Rue.

The case has been adjourned to April 29 for further proceedings.
