The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has strongly condemned the recent increase in tariffs imposed by telecommunications companies across Nigeria.
The organization has issued a warning, threatening to initiate nationwide protests if the hike is not reversed. Specifically, they plan to mobilize students nationwide for a series of street protests once the ultimatum expires.NANS argues that the arbitrary tariff hikes burden millions of Nigerians, especially students and young people who are significant consumers of telecommunications services. The student body asserts that this decision has led to a considerable rise in the costs of calls, data, and other communication services, which is unjustifiable given the ongoing economic difficulties faced by many citizens.
They deem this act as a blatant disregard for the welfare of the populace and a violation of the principles of affordability and accessibility that should govern the telecommunications sector.In a recent statement, NANS emphasized the negative impact that these increased tariffs would have on students. Many rely heavily on affordable telecommunications for various essential purposes, including academic research, virtual learning, and maintaining connections with their families.
The organization expressed concern over the rationale behind the tariff increases, characterizing the move as a direct threat to students’ security and an impediment to their academic pursuits and personal livelihoods.
Consequently, In a statement jointly signed on Thursday in Abuja by the NANS National Secretary-General, Comrade Anzaku Shedrack Ovye, and Comrade Samson Ajasa Adeyemi, NANS has issued a 72-hour ultimatum to telecommunications companies, the Honourable Minister for Innovation, Digital and Blue Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, and the Nigerian Communications Commission, demanding a reversal of the tariff hike..
They seek a clear plan to ensure affordable telecommunications services for all Nigerians. Failure to meet this ultimatum will result in NANS mobilizing students for peaceful protests aimed at demanding justice, accountability, and a thorough audit of the telecommunications sector.
The leadership of NANS has stated their resolve to protect the rights and welfare of Nigerian students against what they term “corporate capitalism” and regulatory complicity. Furthermore, they are calling on the Federal Government to take immediate and effective action to address this issue while urging telecommunications companies to prioritize customer interests over profit margins.
They advocate for meaningful dialogue with stakeholders to develop sustainable solutions that avoid further economic hardship for Nigerians already in distress.”As the voice of Nigerian students, NANS remains dedicated to pursuing policies that promote fairness, equity, and the well-being of all Nigerians.
