Former presidential aide Reno Omokri has lauded President Bola Tinubu for the significant progress he has made during his 22 months in office, highlighting improvements in the lives of Nigerians since Tinubu’s inauguration. Omokri also expressed approval of former President Muhammadu Buhari’s recent reaffirmation of loyalty to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
This declaration contradicts former Kaduna State Governor Nasir el-Rufai’s assertion that his recent defection to the Social Democratic Party (SDP) had Buhari’s endorsement. El-Rufai claimed that he received the former president’s approval for his party switch; however, Buhari’s media aide, Mallam Garba Shehu, emphasized that the former president remains committed to the APC.“My view of General Muhammadu Buhari has improved following his statement reaffirming his loyalty to the APC and undermining el-Rufai’s claims,” Omokri stated in a release on Friday.
He believes that Buhari’s loyalty acknowledges the accomplishments of his successor.According to Omokri, Tinubu is effectively guiding Nigeria towards recovery, citing various achievements.
He noted that the Sokoto-Badagry Highway is advancing toward Kebbi, the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway is nearing Ondo State, and fuel prices have decreased to an average of ₦850 per liter. Additionally, approximately 400,000 students are benefiting from student loans, the minimum wage has risen to ₦70,000, and food prices have shown slight declines. He pointed out a significant drop in inflation from 34.80% to 24.48% by January 2025, as well as a record high in power generation at 6,003 MW, the country’s highest ever.Omokri also highlighted that federal allocations to states have increased significantly, and incidents of terrorism and insecurity are at their lowest since 2014, with a 3.8% GDP growth recorded in Q4 2024.
The trade surplus has soared by 209.6% to ₦18.86 trillion in 2024 from ₦6.09 trillion in 2023.
He remarked that citizens are earning more, students are learning more effectively, and overall safety has improved compared to 2023. Omokri argued that it is inconceivable for Nigerians to overlook these achievements and support a coalition led by el-Rufai and former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi against Tinubu.Praising Buhari for prioritizing national unity over ethnic affiliations, Omokri stated, “I didn’t expect this from him, and now that he has acted in this manner, he has renewed hope for those of us who believe in a united Nigeria.
He commended Buhari for maintaining integrity by supporting both the APC and the current president, who has been favorable towards him.“Throughout Buhari’s tenure, Tinubu remained loyal even when it was politically costly,” he recalled.
He noted that Tinubu did not criticize Buhari despite challenges, suggesting it is fitting for Buhari to align with Tinubu rather than with someone described by former President Obasanjo as having ‘inability to be loyal to anybody or any issue consistently for long, but only to Nasir el-Rufai.’Omokri admitted that his earlier impression of Buhari was misguided, acknowledging that the former president has demonstrated honor and conviction.
He pointed out that Buhari’s renewed support for the APC might dissuade other party members who may have been led astray by el-Rufai’s claims.
