Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has suspended Friday Ibadin, the Commander of the Edo State Security Corps, following the lynching of travelers in Uromi on March 27.

An angry mob killed and burned the victims, mainly from northern Nigeria, after a local vigilante group accused them of carrying firearms in a Dangote Cement truck. Police managed to rescue 10 others, while the deceased were buried on Saturday.In a statement, Secretary to the State Government Musa Ikhilor confirmed Ibadin’s suspension and announced a ban on all unregistered vigilante groups operating in the state.

The statement emphasized that the vigilante group involved was illegal and not registered with the Edo State Security Corps.Governor Okpebholo’s administration disavowed the group’s actions, asserting they contradict state principles. Investigations into the incident are ongoing, with 14 arrests made and a manhunt initiated for additional suspects.

The state is in contact with the victims’ families and community leaders, reaffirming its commitment to justice and the constitutional rights of citizens to travel freely.
