The Federal Government has announced plans to begin repairs on the collapsed Namnai Bridge in Gassol Local Government Area of Taraba State next week.
The bridge, which collapsed during last year’s rainy season, has created significant difficulties for local motorists and residents.During a site inspection on Thursday, Minister of State for Regional Development Uba Maigari described the situation as critical and promised urgent action to restore the important link.He noted that engineers and experts have already evaluated the bridge to decide on the best reconstruction method and mentioned that the Federal Government will work with the Taraba State Government to expedite the project and alleviate the challenges faced by road users.Maigari pointed out that the North East Development Commission had previously sent engineers and quantity surveyors to assess the bridge’s condition.
The Namnai Bridge is one of twelve in need of emergency intervention across the six states of the North-East region due to unforeseen challenges related to natural events.Discussions regarding this bridge, along with the Mayokam, Suntai, and Bantaji bridges, took place six weeks ago during a visit from Taraba State Governor Dr. Agbu Kefas to the ministry.
Additionally, Maigari mentioned that the recently awarded Akwana Road project is part of the government’s broader infrastructure development goals in the state.
He emphasized the government’s commitment to swift action, stating, “This bridge requires immediate attention. We are dedicated to making the road usable as soon as possible. You can hold us accountable—within one week, we will provide a solution.
The Namnai Bridge, located along the Jalingo-Wukari Federal Highway, had seen temporary repairs made by local residents, but heavy rains on Tuesday night swept away the makeshift structure, worsening the situation.
