The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has assured that corps members who recently completed their national service will receive the arrears of the N77,000 allowance.Director-General of the NYSC, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, gave this assurance during the Batch A 2025 pre-mobilization workshop for heads of corps-producing institutions and other stakeholders in Abuja on Thursday.
The government began disbursing the N77,000 allowance last month, eight months after President Bola Tinubu signed the minimum wage bill into law.Speaking with reporters at the event, the DG stated:
The government is fully aware of its commitment, and within the available budgetary provisions, it will fulfill that promise.
Once funds are released to us, we will clear the arrears. Even corps members who recently completed their service will benefit.
As soon as we receive financial backing, we will credit their accounts—we have their bank details. Nigerians should not worry because the government is both responsible and responsive to their needs.”Meanwhile, the Director of Corps Mobilization, Mohammed Abubakar, highlighted the persistent issue of tertiary institutions fraudulently uploading unqualified graduates into the NYSC system.“We have made significant progress in recent years, greatly reducing challenges through innovative approaches and better collaboration.
However, fraudulent enrollments remain a major issue, and we must tackle this problem. As we prepare for another batch of NYSC mobilization, we need to address these pressing concerns.
The integrity of the process is vital to our nation’s growth, and we must stay vigilant and proactive,” he said.Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, emphasized the need to reform the scheme in alignment with the Renewed Hope Agenda of the current administration.
I remember when the scheme was created in 1973—it served a specific purpose. Since then, much has changed, and we must reform the scheme to adapt to our evolving society,” he said.“As Nigeria progresses, the NYSC must also evolve to meet the demands of the job market.
We must address the gaps and ensure the scheme adequately prepares graduates for employment. Reshaping the process is essential to align with the needs of the labor market.
Reforming NYSC mobilization is not the government’s responsibility alone; it requires a collective effort. Together, we can build an NYSC that is adaptive, inclusive, and beneficial for future generations.
