The Minister of Education, Olatunji Alausa, has proposed extending the mandatory National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme from one year to two years. Alausa made this announcement during a courtesy visit from the NYSC Director-General, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, to his office in Abuja on Friday.
A statement shared on NYSC’s official Facebook page noted that the minister also urged for an enhancement of the Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development Training Programme for corps members.
The minister advocated not only for the extension of national service to two years but also for the enrichment of the NYSC Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development Training Programme content,” the statement said.
Furthermore, Alausa emphasized the importance of deploying more graduate teachers to rural schools to address the staffing shortages in these areas. He praised the NYSC management for its proactive and digital initiatives aimed at tackling certificate fraud involving foreign-trained graduates from West Africa. Alausa also commended the scheme for resolving the longstanding issues faced by OND part-time graduates with full-time HND status, who were previously exempt from National Service.
He mentioned ongoing efforts within the ministry to digitize the verification process for foreign-trained graduates of Nigerian origin, reaffirming the commitment to strengthen collaboration between the Ministry of Education and the NYSC to enhance educational development for national progress.”You have performed admirably as an organization. Let the NYSC offer more opportunities for individuals to become job creators, thereby addressing the country’s needs,” he stated.Earlier, Brigadier General Nafiu praised the ministry for its innovative approaches and significant achievements in the education sector.
He proposed the establishment of a database for Nigerian youths pursuing degree programs abroad, which would assist the government and education stakeholders in identifying fraudulent graduates.
NYSC is prepared to align with policy directives from the Federal Government. We are also working on reforming the Scheme to meet the current national requirements,” he said.
The Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Education, Abel Olumuyiwa Enitan, expressed the Ministry’s commitment to collaborating more effectively with the NYSC to enhance the quality of education in Nigeria.
