The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has raised serious concerns regarding the alleged failure to disburse student loans from the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), despite reports indicating that the funds have been released. According to an investigation, certain tertiary institutions and banks might be withholding these loans from students, which was highlighted during a recent meeting involving the NANS’s spokesman, Samson Adeyemi.

The findings of the investigation, presented by officials from the National Orientation Agency, indicated unethical practices by some institutions that have not communicated with students about the loans disbursed on their behalf while continuing to demand tuition payments.

This has been characterized by Adeyemi as “deceptive” and a significant breach of trust, particularly bad for students depending on these loans to manage their educational expenses.NANS has warned institutions involved in these practices to stop immediately, threatening mobilization for protests and legal actions against any institutions found guilty.

They have also encouraged affected students to report such cases to NANS representatives in their states. Adeyemi has emphasized the organization’s commitment to defending students’ rights and advocating for transparent access to financial aid to support their education.

NANS is urging NELFUND and related authorities to increase their oversight and resolve these issues promptly.
