The newly established Federal University of Medicine and Medical Sciences, Abeokuta (FUMMSA) is set to commence its academic session in September, as announced by its vice chancellor, Professor Fatiu Arogundade.Arogundade made this announcement during a recent courtesy visit from the university’s Governing Council, led by Chairman Dr. Usman Muhammed Shanawa, to the Federal Medical Centre Idi-Aba, Abeokuta.
He stated that FUMMSA would initially launch its academic programs at the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), offering courses in medicine, nursing, and other health-related fields.“All necessary logistics are being arranged to ensure a successful launch,” Arogundade reassured.
The university is set to start in September, all other things being equal. While we are uncertain about our carrying capacity, we will definitely commence with courses in Medicine, Nursing, and Medical Rehabilitation, among others.
He further noted that officials from the National Universities Commission (NUC) are expected to conduct a verification exercise soon.
The NUC will guide us on the number of students we can admit, especially given our limited facilities,” he explained.Arogundade highlighted that the university would be utilizing facilities provided by FUNAAB, but it is unlikely they will have access to all hostels and lecture rooms available at the institution. “Ultimately, our carrying capacity will dictate the number of courses and students we begin with,” he added.Chairman Shanawa praised the management of the Federal Medical Centre and commended Medical Director Professor Adewale Musa-Olomu for his determination and efforts in bringing the university to fruition.
He also suggested converting the Federal Medical Centre into a teaching hospital to support the university, rather than establishing a new teaching hospital, citing the current economic climate in the country.
In his response, Professor Musa-Olomu expressed his commitment to supporting the university’s development.
I am willing to assist in any capacity needed by the university.
My support is available,” he affirmed.
He also emphasized the collective aspiration of all stakeholders to see FUMMSA emerge as a leading institution in medical education and research, both nationally and internationally. Musa-Olomu urged the governing council to request that the federal government upgrade the Federal Medical Centre, Abeokuta, to a teaching hospital.
