The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) wing of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has directed all public primary and secondary school teachers to embark on an indefinite strike beginning Monday.

The directive was issued in a communiqué released after an emergency State Wing Executive Council (SWEC) meeting held in Gwagwalada, Abuja, on Friday.

The statement was jointly signed by State Chairman Abdullahi Shafa, State Secretary Margaret Jethro, and State Publicity Secretary Ibukun Adekeye.

According to the union, teachers are to fully comply with the strike action and remain at home until further notice.

Parents were also advised to keep their children and wards safe at home as schools will remain closed during the period.

The NUT explained that the decision followed the expiration of a seven-day ultimatum issued to the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, on March 11, as well as an additional 28-day grace period, both of which failed to yield any concrete response from the authorities.

While acknowledging the Minister’s efforts in implementing the N70,000 minimum wage and settling nine months’ salary arrears for primary school teachers, the union expressed dissatisfaction over unresolved issues from previous agreements.

It recalled that a committee set up on July 7, 2025, to address outstanding entitlements and provide lasting solutions to recurring disputes, had submitted its report in August 2025.

However, the report has yet to be released or implemented. The union stressed that the continued delay, coupled with the harsh economic conditions, prompted the strike action.

It also demanded the removal of the “vacancies” requirement for teacher promotions and a comprehensive review of the 2024 promotion exercise conducted by the FCT Civil Service Commission.

Following extensive deliberations, the council concluded that the strike would continue indefinitely until all demands are addressed.
