The National Executive Council (NEC) of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) has cautioned the Federal Government over the ongoing renegotiation with university unions, stressing that discussions are still in progress and far from being finalized.In a communiqué released after a special NEC meeting held on Saturday at the union’s national secretariat in Abuja, SSANU leaders dismissed claims circulating in the public that an agreement had already been reached.
The statement, signed by SSANU National President Muhammad Ibrahim, clarified that negotiations remain unresolved, contrary to reports suggesting their conclusion.
The council also raised concerns over a widely circulated letter claiming a 30 percent increase in allowances had been approved, insisting that no such binding agreement exists at this stage.
SSANU maintained that it would reject any outcome that does not reflect the mutual understanding reached during negotiations, emphasizing the need for fairness, due process, and respect for collective bargaining.Reaffirming its earlier ultimatum issued alongside the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU), the union gave the Federal Government until April 30, 2026, to conclude negotiations and sign a final agreement.
According to the NEC, failure to meet this deadline will compel both unions to embark on an indefinite and comprehensive industrial action across universities nationwide.Members were urged to remain calm but stay alert and united, ready to comply with any directives from the union leadership in defense of their rights and welfare.
SSANU reiterated its commitment to protecting the interests of its members, vowing to pursue justice with determination and unity.
The latest warning follows a similar stance taken after the union’s 54th NEC meeting at Ekiti State University, where concerns were raised over delayed salaries, inadequate funding, and worsening working conditions in Nigerian universities.
At that time, SSANU had expressed frustration over the slow pace of negotiations and warned that continued delays could trigger a strike alongside other non-teaching staff unions.
