As we approach the 2027 presidential election, significant changes seem to be unfolding in Northern Nigerian politics. Support groups for Atiku Abubakar, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate in the 2023 election, have switched allegiance from the PDP to the All Progressives Congress (APC).Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, the National Chairman of the APC, along with Senator Barau Jibrin, Deputy President of the Senate representing Kano North, welcomed these groups into the APC fold yesterday.
The groups expressed their decision to join the APC and support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, attributing their move to the encouragement and representation provided by Senator Barau at the National Assembly.
Formally announcing their defection at the A-Class Event Centre in Abuja, the Coalition of Atiku Support Groups, comprising representatives from the 19 Northern States and the Federal Capital Territory, pledged to rally support for President Tinubu in the upcoming 2027 election.
The event witnessed the attendance of five representatives from each of the northern states and the FCT, all committing to work diligently for the success of the Tinubu administration.Hon. Abubakar Malami, Coordinator of the Coalition, highlighted the diverse composition of the group, which includes women, youth, students, traders, academics, and farmers from various religious and ethnic backgrounds.
He reflected on their mobilization efforts during the 2023 elections, emphasizing the acknowledgment and appreciation they received from Atiku Abubakar and his team for their contributions to his campaign. “In 2027, we will strive for the continuity of President Tinubu’s administration,” he affirmed, thanking Senator Barau for his efforts in addressing regional and national challenges.Senator Barau Jibrin described the defection as a significant achievement, expressing his enthusiasm that these groups are aligning with President Tinubu in pursuit of a development agenda aimed at transforming Nigeria into a prosperous nation.
He conveyed his pleasure at welcoming the former Atiku supporters into the APC family, reinforcing their shared commitment to national progress.
